Sir Wilfred Grenfell College Sir Wilfred Grenfell College is a small (1100 students) Liberal Arts and Science institution and a
campus of Memorial University of Newfoundland. The College seeks applications for the following probationary (tenure track) and term appointments.
Except where specified, these positions require the completion or near completion of a Ph.D.
Position One: Geography/Environmental Studies: A probationary (tenure track) position which supports an
interdisciplinary Bachelor of Arts programme in Environmental Studies and the initial years of a
Bachelor’s Program in Geography. Candidates with a broad background in human geography,
geographic information systems, and the capacity to teach both economic and cultural geography,
will be considered. Experience in such areas as remote sensing, risk assessment, and quantitative
methods will be an advantage. Appointment starts July 1, 2002.
Position Two: Geography/Environmental Studies: A teaching term appointment. This position supports an
interdisciplinary Bachelor of Arts in Environmental Studies and initial years of a Bachelor’s Program
in Geography. Candidates with a broad background in physical geography, quantitative methods
and resource management will be considered. As well, the ability to offer a winter outdoor pursuits
course with an emphasis in trail skiing, ski touring and telemarking, and avalanche safety is a definite
advantage. Preference will be given to those who have demonstrated skill in teaching at the
university level.Note that all teaching term appointments will be of the contract period of August 19, 2002 to April 30,
2003.

School of Geography and Geology The School of Geography and Geology at McMaster University invites applications for two tenure track positions at the Assistant Professor level beginning July 1, 2002. Candidates applying at the Associate level will also be considered under exceptional circumstances.
Position one: Spatial analysis, with an emphasis on GIS applications, and a research specialization in an area that complements the School's strengths including urban/economic/industrial geography or transportation modeling. Strong quantitative skills are essential. Ability to teach location theory, spatial analysis and/or the development of decision-support systems an asset. Department of Geography The Department of Geography invites applications for one tenure-track
position in Geographic Information Science and its applications. This
position is part of a planned sequence of appointments relating to our
Masters in Geographic Information Systems (MGIS) program. The position is at
the assistant professor rank and provides an opportunity for a successful
appointee to contribute to an exciting degree program. The position begins 1
July 2002. Applicants should hold a Ph.D. degree at the time of appointment.
The Department is seeking expertise in either of the following areas: (1)
GIS Policy and Management (focused on the organizational issues associated
with GIS implementation and use in policy and decision-making at all levels
of government and in industry; or focused on GIS Policy as it relates to
standards (data, spatial structures, interoperability), education, and
professionalism within the industry) or, (2) GIS Data Issues (including,
data quality, data structures, database design, data mining, warehousing and
management issues, security and infrastructure as they relate to GIS and
spatial environments).
The successful candidate’s principal duties include teaching in the MGIS
Program. Candidates also will be expected to participate in undergraduate
teaching, graduate teaching and supervision (in both MGIS and Departmental
thesis-based programs), research and university service. The Department,
with a current faculty complement of 28 members, offers BA and BSc degrees
and a graduate program leading to the MGIS, MA, MSc and Ph.D. degrees.

Department of Geography The Department of Geography at the University of Lethbridge invites applications for two probationary continuing Academic Assistant positions beginning 1 July 2002, subject to budgetary approval.
A Master's degree (at or near completion) is required in Geography or a related geomatics/ spatial analysis discipline with an academic background in some combination of GIS, remote sensing, computer cartography, spatial statistics and atmospheric science. The ability to teach laboratory assignments using some combination of software including ArcInfo/ArcView, MapInfo, PCI Easi/Pace, ENVI, CorelDraw and SPSS is required.
Instructional duties will include: preparation and delivery of laboratory sections for courses in GIS, computer cartography, remote sensing, weather and climate, and the analysis of geographical data; grading of student work; and consultation with students outside of scheduled teaching hours. ii) Physical Geography / Earth Science Department of Geography The Department of Geography at the University of Lethbridge invites applications for two 2-year term positions at the Assistant Professor level beginning 1 July 2002, subject to budgetary approval. For both positions, a Ph.D. is required (at or near completion) in Geography or a related discipline. The successful applicants will be expected to develop a continuing research program, and to seek external research funding. For position one, we seek candidates with a strong background in applied Geographical Information Science and spatial modelling in human or physical geography.
For position two, we seek a physical geographer/earth scientist with the ability to teach some combination of introductory physical geography, intermediate geomorphology, field techniques in the earth sciences, Quaternary studies, and soils geography. Teaching and research experience in the application of Geographical Information Science would be an asset.
The Department of Geography at The University of Lethbridge has a young enthusiastic group of faculty members that include human and physical geographers and archeologists with diverse and active research programs. Our undergraduate majors in geography have the opportunity to include a “Concentration in Geographic Information Science” in their programs. Geography Program The Geography Program at the University of Northern British Columbia

Faculty of Environmental Studies and Department of Recreation and Leisure Studies The Faculty of Environmental Studies and the Department of Recreation and
Leisure Studies of the Faculty of Applied Health Sciences at the University
of Waterloo invite applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in
Tourism. Appointment is conditional on the successful applicant being
approved as a Tier 2 Canada Research Chair.
Candidates should have a strong background in aspects of tourism planning
and policy broadly conceived rather than specifically in hospitality or
catering. Through an appropriate record of research or industrial
experience, the candidate will demonstrate an ability to undertake research
and contribute to teaching in tourism and be familiar with relationships
between tourism and such areas as resources management, parks and protected
areas, land use analysis, culture, built heritage, destination marketing,
and local or international development.
This is chiefly a research chair with modest research funding and teaching
reduction. While the successful candidate will be expected to teach at the
graduate and undergraduate levels, the appointment will be focused on
research. The Committee will favour candidates whose research interests
are compatible with the interests of the Faculty of Environmental Studies
and the Department of Recreation and Leisure Studies and whose work
promises opportunities for fruitful collaborations within and beyond these
two areas.
The Faculty of Environmental Studies comprises two professional schools -

Department of Land Resource Science, The Department of Land Resource Science at the University of Guelph invites applications for a tenure track faculty position in Quaternary Glacial Geology. The
department consists of four main disciplines (atmospheric science, soil science, surficial geology, and resources management), with an emphasis on near-surface
processes and the environment. The ideal candidate will have the ability to relate glacial geology to soil formation and land use. Knowledge of sedimentary rocks
and fluvial processes is expected. The position involves teaching undergraduate courses in Glacial Geology, Sedimentology, occasionally Introductory Geology, and
participation in a graduate course in Environmental Geology. The candidate will be expected to supervise graduate students and initiate and maintain a vigorous,
externally funded research program. Research in genesis and stratigraphy of Pleistocene glacial sediments with emphasis on land resources and the environment will
be expected. As well, collaborative research is encouraged with colleagues in other aspects of groundwater geology, soil science, environmental engineering, and
plant agriculture. The successful applicant will join an active department that consists of 17 faculty members (3 hired within the past two years), 5 full-time
technicians (one devoted to assisting with teaching of geology courses), 55 graduate students and over 100 undergraduate students. Included among department
instrumentation are x-ray diffraction, atomic absorption flame and graphite furnace, automated colorimetric systems, inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission
spectrophotometer, isotope ratio mass spectrometer (15N configured), ion chromatography, thin sectioning equipment (both rock and unconsolidated materials),
ground penetrating radar, image analysis hardware and software. For field trips and research, Guelph is located in a classical glaciated landscape within two-hours
drive of excellent exposures of Pleistocene glacial sediments along the north shore of Lakes Ontario and Erie. Opportunities exist for collaboration with a strong
geomorphology group in the Department of Geography at Guelph and geology programs in neighboring universities (e.g. Waterloo, McMaster). Qualifications: Ph.D.
degree in Geology or closely related discipline.
