Research Interests

My research has always focused on conservation with a strong interest on the establishment and management of protected areas. I have worked on both terrestrial and marine protected areas but now focus mainly on marine as I see this as the main challenge for conservation. My research programmes are focused in Southeast Asia and Canada where we have studied a wide range of topics that range from natural science (eg seagrass ecology, whale shark monitoring, coral reef assessments) to social science (eg.economic impacts of diving, mpa governance, indigenous perspectives) and the relationship between them (eg PA management plans). A main focus in Southeast Asia has been the development and assessment of incentive-based conservation activities that assist local communities in protecting biodiversity. In Canada I am the Leader of the Marine Protected Area Working Group of the Ocean Management Research Network and active in developing a research agenda to assist in the establishment and effective management of MPAs. I am also Co-Chair of Parks Canada’s NMCA Science Advisory Network and Leader of the MPA Research Group within the Geography Department.

Some projects underway at the moment include:

  • Governance of MPA’s in Canada
  • Scuba diving as an incentive-based conservation mechanism in Thailand.
  • Whale shark tourism in Honduras
  • Development of an integrated conservation development programme in the Cardamom Mountains, Cambodia.

Teaching

I believe strongly in the teaching mission for universities and was awarded the University of Victoria Alumni Award for Teaching in 1998. I have taught a wide variety of courses but now focus on:

Geog 101A Society and Environment This course introduces students to a the main biophysical processes that support life on Earth, the ways in which human activities disrupt these processes and what some of the solutions might be. I have taught this course every year since 1980 and, noticing that there were no environmental text books written specifically for Canada, co-wrote a text book Environmental Change and Challenge: A Canadian perspective published by Oxford University Press that is now widely used in universities across Canada.

Geog 382 Geography of Southeast Asia. I have spent more than 25 years working in Southeast Asia. This experience forms the basis for my teaching in this course that seeks to give students an overview of the Geography of the region liberally illustrated by my slides from the area.

Geog 457 Marine Protected Areas. This is my main area of research interest. The course builds upon the third year course (Geog 357) on protected areas in Canada that I also used to teach on a regular basis. This latter course uses my text book Parks and Protected Areas in Canada: Planning and Management, also published by Oxford University Press.

Geog 539 Advanced Seminar in Resource Management. This graduate course allows graduate students to discuss key theories in resource management and the cutting edge of research in their particular areas.

Graduate Supervision
I have supervised 17 PhD degrees with 5 currently in progress and 28 MA/MSc with 1 in progress. Listings of the titles of some of these theses are given on the MPARG section of this website.
