Recently completed research projects include the advancement of the design of databases for interactive marine GIS applications, the analytical customization of GIS to solve ill-structured geographic problems, the advancement of surface interpolation techniques, the modeling and visualization of geographic data uncertainty, and the theoretical advancement of GIS towards a tool for exploratory geographical analysis.

Risk Modelling
I am one of the lead scientists in an NCE GEOIDE funded risk modeling and spatial tessellation research project whose mandate is to assist the Canadian Coastguards in medium and long-term strategic deployment of their search and rescue resources. This work is done in collaboration with partners in Survey Engineering at UNB and Engineering at Dalhousie University as well as the Coastguards.

Community Mapping
I have a number of projects on the go investigating community mapping and the design of community information systems. We have just completed a CIDA funded case study working with two Dyak communities in East Kalimantan, Borneo, Indonesia. This work was done in collaboration with local community groups in Victoria and Indonesia, with CIFOR, and with SHK, a local NGO in East Kalimantan. Efforts to secure funding from CIDA to continue this work were not successful. New initiatives are being started with Canadian Indigeous Peoples.

Spatial Decision Support
An ongoing project investigates the design of spatial decision support systems to facilitate valuation of land for land uses difficult to quantify in monetary terms. A recently completed study focused on valuation of large parcels of land for tourism and outdoor recreational use. Case studies were in the Okanagan and the Gulf Islands.

Map Design and Governance
Other ongoing research projects explore governance of geographic information, strategies to solicit user-input when creating geographic information end-products, and ongoing research into map design and cartographic communication. Recent thematic foci are regional and thematic web-based atlas design as well as tourism mapping.

Tourism Mapping
I am interested in the evolution and growth of tourism in destination regions. Past studies have examined the growth of tourism in Chiang Mai, Thailand. An ongoing study is investigating tourism development and thresholds to growth in Tofino, BC.

Education
Finally, I have a genuine interest in the delivery of excellence in university teaching, educational outreach and life-long learning. I continually seek innovative approaches and solutions to teaching about geographic information. We are working on a project that seeks to understand the changing world of geographic information literacy in a high technology world with the K-12 curriculum as a focus.
