Research

My research programm is tied to the BC Centre for Applied Remote Sensing, Modelling, and Simulation (BC-CARMS). Through this centre, and its partnerships with industry and government, we have built a remote sensing capacity that includes an airborne platform (multi-engine Beechcraft Navaho) complete with digital cameras, first and last return 100kHz LiDAR, a 480 channel (400-2450nm) airborne imaging spectrometer, Applanix IMU, and survey quality GPS. In addition through our affiliation with the Canadian Bouyed Monitoring Programme we have developed 2 instrumented buoys designed to operate in inshore coastal waters (see #4 below).

My research programme is currently addressing a number of specific issues related to changes in the attributes of the West Coast forest canopy and the resultant impact on ecophysiological processes. These issues include:

1) Forest canopy structure mapping using remotely sensed data;

2) Characterization of ecophysiological environments using remotely sensed data;

3) Wetland mapping; and

4) Using remotely sensed products as inputs into the study and modelling of linked terrestrial-coastal studies.
