CANADA CENTRE FOR REMOTE SENSING - NEW WEBSITE

The Canada Centre for Remote Sensing (CCRS), a part of Natural Resources Canada (NRCan), has released a new website.

The new site focuses on CCRS' research and development (R&D) work, undertaken to extract value from highly complex remotely-sensed data obtained over Canada, from both Canadian and foreign-owned earth observation satellites. Such work leverages the billions of dollars Canada invests in space infrastructure, generating value-added information that facilitates government decision-making and operations.

New content is presented and the site is organized to highlight CCRS' different R&D areas, including radar, optical and hyperspectral methods and applications, and emergency management. The new site also enables users to access CCRS' sister sites, which feature the Earth Observation Data Service and the Canadian Spatial Reference System.

The websites improved design complements other NRCan websites. It retains popular features from CCRS' previous site, such as the remote sensing glossary and tutorials. The site will be updated periodically to present CCRS' ongoing activities, in remote sensing R&D, as well as in geodesy and satellite data ground reception, archiving and access.

Visit the new CCRS website at the following address:

UVIC GEOGRAPHERS IN THE NEWS - KEN JOSEPHSON

What’s in a place?

Vivian Moreau
Oak Bay News
January 27, 2010

Community maps chart much more than how to get where you’re going

The salmon was buried in the cook pit that had been dug on the beach at Tod Inlet.

As guests at the outdoor feast gathered, an elderly woman walked by. When she stopped and looked over curiously, Ken Josephson told her how the group was there to share stories about the area.

Although she’d lived all her life in the neighbourhood, the senior said she had no stories to share.

“But then she told us how she remembered riding a horse as a young girl along the road. And that on the hills where there were now houses, there used to be Chinese farmers’ fields,” Josephson said.

Those are the kinds of details that can be included in a community map, he said.

Not just a guide to the geography of an area, it pinpoints cultural, historic and personal landmarks important to residents.

In Oak Bay that could mean Bowker Creek, but it could also mean the 300-year-old Chestnut tree on Victoria Avenue.

A cartographer with the University of Victoria’s geography department, Josephson is part of a plan by the school to help engage communities in the mapping process.

Next week the Oak Bay Community Association, with UVic’s geography department and the UVic office of community-based research, host an open house on community mapping.

Maps from areas such as the Highlands, which recently completed one, will be on display. Josephson will also be there to answer questions about the importance of the work that goes into pulling together the maps.

“Some people think of maps as something you turn on the computer to take a look at. But this is something completely different. It’s a collective view of what we value and cherish in a community.”

He points out that although Highlands group members had polar opposite views on developments such as Bear Mountain, they nevertheless found common ground. “How fragile the water aquifer is in Highlands was a really key story for them.”

For Jill Croft, taking note of Oak Bay’s lanes and alleys is an important aspect of the community map.

She and her husband, Tom, who also founded the community association, cycled and walked as many of the 15 kilometres of lanes in the municipality as they could.

From a neighbourhood standpoint, the community association took over the mapping project from an ad hoc group that started it two years ago.

Coun. Pam Copley, a member of the original group, said a community map can be a useful tool for future planning and also helps build relationships between neighbours. She added that securing municipal funding to support the project has been tough, however.

Josephson has helped create three maps in the Victoria area for communities that have found funding. He agreed with Copley that such a map has reverberating importance.

“The finished map is not necessarily the most significant part of the process. It is about those connections that are made,” he said.

The senior who stopped by the cook pit was invited to attend further meetings in the neighbourhood and even supplied some rare 1940s photos from when Saanich Inlet froze over.

“The idea of maps like these is giving voices to the unheard stories,” Josephson said.

The open house, entitled ‘A Work in Progress,’ takes place Thursday, Feb. 4, from 7 to 9 p.m. in room B209 at UVic’s Social Sciences and Mathematics building (across from the Centennial stadium parking lot). Admission is free, but please RSVP to Jill Croft, 250-595-6284.

CLIMATE CHANGE TEACH-IN

Why is the Teach-In Important?

Climate change is more than an environmental issue. It spans the disciplines from engineering to psychology, from commerce to creative writing, and everything in between. Now, with the failure of Copenhagen to produce a fair, ambitious and binding treaty, and with the outcome of the Waxman-Markey Bill in the US very much in question, it is becoming increasingly obvious that bottom-up action on climate change is extremely important.

The Teach-In creates a much-needed opportunity for students (and teachers) to become involved in meaningful discussion about climate justice. Climate justice examines how the groups that stand to be most affected by climate change (e.g. the global south), are often also the groups that have done the least to contribute to the problem in the first place. Thinking about climate change is the first step towards strengthening public consensus on the issue, and allows everyday people to begin considering solutions.

How Can You Get Involved?
The most effective way to sign up faculty for the teach-in is to approach them face-to-face. This strategy works even better when the recruiter is one of the instructor's students. If you think the teach-in sounds valuable, GoBeyond and Common Energy are asking you to approach your profs and ask them to take part. You just need their department, faculty, and e-mail to sign them up online here.

Please read on to find out what the teach-in is all about. It's fine if you don't remember all of what's below, because once faculty are signed up they will receive an e-mail with all of the resources they need to direct a teach-in in their classroom.

What is the Teach-In?
Who: 200 faculty members and 10,000 students will participate in this initiative through the youth-led goBEYOND Project, Sierra Youth Coalition, and a number of international organizations.
What: Teachers from across the province leading discussions with their students, this year on the topic of climate justice, and how their discipline can contribute to solutions. Depending on their class, faculty can decide if they prefer to lead a 15 minute discussion, a full-class discussion, or integrate the Teach-In into an assignment for their students. Suggested discussion questions are provided. Want more info? Check out the Teach-In Guide for Students on GoBeyond's website.
Where: British Columbia, Canada and the World! Over 17 universities and colleges all across British Columbia engaged 20 000 students last year. This year, we will be partnering with schools across Canada through the Sierra Youth Coalition, and in Africa and India through international partners to help deliver the Teach-In and underscore the international scope of the issue.
When: From March 1-12, 2010.
Contact: Any questions? Feel free to e-mail info@campusclimtatenetwork.org for help.

The Mountain Legacy Project
Field Assistants
May - August 2010

The Mountain Legacy Project ( http://www.mountainlegacy.ca/) is looking for summer field assistants. Working with historical mountain survey photographs we locate the original camera locations and repeat the images. The paired photographs, many of which show dramatic changes, are being used to analyze the cultural and ecological history of protected and working landscapes – changing vegetation patterns, water channels, human activities, etc.

The work is hard: although many of the survey stations are easy day-trips, some of them will be accessed well off the beaten path. Few of the mountains require technical climbing skills, but all of them involve serious scrambling (Class III-IV). We are using a medium-format digital camera which, together with associated equipment, adds 25
pounds to our well-loaded packs. Days start early and are long. We work when the sun shines, and sleep when it rains. And we never have fun!

We are looking for several assistants to help with all aspects of field support, which requires

-strong outdoor skills, including mountain scrambling (mountaineering skills desirable) and comfort with exposed alpine environments, backcountry camping, bushwhacking, off-trail route finding, and trip planning
-ability to carry 25-40 lb packs in exposed alpine environments
-wilderness first aid certification
-flexibility, and the ability to deal with unusual or unforeseen occurrences
-experience with or ability to work in and around helicopters
-working well with others in general, and in potentially difficult situations
-experience in bear country (black and grizzly)
-ability to laugh in the pouring rain….
-interest in interdisciplinary approaches to restoration and management of protected areas, experience with digital photography, and culinary skills would be an asset
-preference given to UVic students and those who have an interest in incorporating this fieldwork into undergraduate or graduate projects

We expect team members to also provide digital and logistical support (post-processing of digital images, managing workflow, maintaining the base camp, providing logistical support to the photographic crews) on a rotating basis.

Specifically you:

-are highly organized and disciplined
-enjoy logistics and trouble-shooting unexpected challenges
-have strong computer skills with preference for Mac OS skills
-are happy to provide general support for photographic teams, including meal planning, shopping and occasional cooking

Two positions will be available from May 3 through August 31, up to four positions will be available from June 21 through August 31. Field work could be extended into mid-September depending on weather.

Applications will be accepted until 4:30 pm Feb 26, 2010, however we will begin reviewing applications Feb 12, 2010.

Please drop off a resume and brief cover letter to:
